The Last Night as a Civil Air Patrol First Sergeant

Cadet Chief Master Sergeant Brandon Lunsford, 19, has served in the non-commissioned ranks for nearly two years, including eight months as the squadron's First Sergeant.

Earlier this week Starbase Commander, Captain Gary Sutherland, had the privilege of appointing Lunsford to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, a cadet officer position.

"This will be a completely different role for Lt Lunsford", Sutherland stated. "This young man has proven himself to be an outstanding First Sergeant. One of my favorite things about this guy is he sees a need and he gets it filled. He developed physical training programs that took my squadron's fitness levels to a whole different level; with 31 of the cadets achieving the highest nationally recognized levels of fitness for their age."

With the appointment to 2nd Lieutenant, Lunsford had to vacate his position as the First Sergeant. The new Cadet Lieutenant had the time-honored tradition of assisting Cadet Commander, 1st Lieutenant Joshua Sutherland, 17, in appointing the squadron's new Cadet First Sergeant, Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Christian Kuerbitz, 17.

"It is a bitter-sweet feeling", Lunsford said, "but I am proud to pass off the position to a fellow cadet who is like a brother to me. I'll miss being the First Shirt, but I am proud to embrace Phase III of the Cadet Program as a Cadet Officer."

Lunsford had the opportunity to train with Kuerbitz during the 2016 Youth on Guard reenactment of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery, dutifully carried out by the 3rd Regiment of the U.S. Army. The reenactment takes place at Floral Haven Cemetery during Memorial Day Weekend.
